Abstract

General Background: The evolution of technology has transformed communication from traditional face-to-face interactions to modern digital platforms, notably social media. Specific Background: Instagram has emerged as a popular medium for sharing photos and information, with accounts like @pintarpolitik actively disseminating political content and viral information. Knowledge Gap: Despite the widespread use of sarcastic language among Gen Z on social media, there is limited research addressing the ethical implications of such communication styles in political discourse. Aims: This study aims to evaluate Gen Z's communication ethics concerning the use of sarcasm in comments on political content shared by @pintarpolitik. Results: Employing descriptive qualitative methods and data collection techniques such as interviews, findings indicate that many Gen Z users frequently employ sarcastic language and dark humor in their comments, particularly in response to political posters like the "Tegar Gajar Deklarasi." This usage often contradicts established communication etiquette and politeness norms. Novelty: This research sheds light on the nuanced ways in which Gen Z engages with political discourse through sarcasm, emphasizing the tension between humor and ethical communication. Implications: The results highlight the need for a deeper understanding of communication ethics in digital political interactions, which may inform future discussions on civility and engagement in online platforms.
